Revival of the Fittest

It started as a pre-dawn drizzle in D.C. when my Dad dropped me off at the airport. By the time I landed in Cleveland, I was greeted with a full-on downpour. Inevitably, my connecting flight to Chicago was delayed due to inclement weather. When I finally arrived at O'Hare, my husband told me there was a bad storm earlier that morning so he wasn't surprised that my flight was late. Although I was only mildly inconvenienced, the stormy weather brought to mind some of the bigger storms of life that stop us in our tracks and force us to change course.

Tragedy, failure, and setbacks can happen at various times in our lives. Some occur unexpectedly through no fault of our own. Other events occur as a result of our own bad choices and poor decisions. Going through the actual storm can be a tumultuous and harrowing experience. Life was never like this and it will never be the same again. But then...the winds calm, the clouds break and we see that we made it to the other side. Mentally and emotionally, we may be tattered, weary or broken down. But we still made it.

You may have just gotten out of a storm or you may be in the midst of one right now. Know that your presence right now is a testament to your strength. You have made it this far for a reason! Others would have fallen with just half of what you've experienced. Yet somehow, you've been able to stand.

When you make it to the other side of a storm, consider that you've been uniquely positioned and equipped to:

- Be a change agent. The problems we face may reveal opportunities for us to initiate change in our lives and the world around us.

- Be a voice for the voiceless. Some people suffer silently in the midst of storms. We can speak to the needs of those who may not be able to speak for themselves.

- Tell your story. Your story is a testimony of survival which can be a source of hope for someone else who is struggling through a similar situation.

Question: How have you used the storms of life to ignite positive change?
