Iron's Sharper Image

When I was in high school, I often studied on my own. I didn't ask my teachers too many questions about assignments. I don't recall participating in any study groups to help prepare for exams. I felt I had a pretty good understanding of what was required and my grades reflected it. Whenever I got together with my friends, it was mainly for extra-curricular activities and rarely for anything academic.

All of that changed when I went to college! At first, I attempted to follow the same formula while studying engineering. I soon discovered that flying solo was not conducive to my academic success. In fact, it was almost detrimental as I found my grades and my scholarship beginning to slip from my grasp during my freshman year. I had to make a change immediately!

Instead of continuing to study in a silo and suffer in silence, I found a group of people to study with....and suffer with!:) For some, it may seem obvious to ask for help from your peers or to seek advice from those who've been where you are. For others, it doesn't always come naturally. I like discovering things on my own. I enjoy teaching myself new things. But sometimes, I've struggled needlessly just because I didn't want to ask for help. One of the best things I did in my college career was find a group of people who wanted to excel academically and graduate on time with an engineering degree. We studied together, challenged each other, and held each other accountable for what we knew we were capable of. To some degree, we supplemented one another.

Are you beginning to explore your gifts and talents? Maybe you're starting a business or breaking into a new industry. Get in the presence of others who are doing what you're doing and going where you want to go. The assembly of like-minded people will help hold you accountable for the talents and gifts on the inside of you. There is a proverb that says "iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another". We all need encouragement and refinement. Find your iron.

Question: Is the company you keep sharpening your iron? If so, are you returning the favor?
