More Than Meets the Eye

Transformers, the multi-billion dollar movie franchise, started out as a toy and an animated series in the 1980's. The vehicles transformed into robots fit for battle. The song from the TV show included the popular tagline "Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye". Although I wasn't a die-hard fan, I can remember transforming an Autobot or two in my youth.
The tagline brought to mind how often we are judged by our outward appearance. Whatever meets the eye, helps to form opinions -- good or bad. Judgments are made about one's background, age, education, etc. Before a word is spoken or any action is taken, boundary lines are mentally drawn. I've been guilty of drawing those lines around others. I've also been the canvas upon which those lines have been drawn.
"More Than Meets The Eye" is a reminder that we are more than our outward appearance and we need to extend that same understanding to others. We all have accomplishments too numerous and dreams too bold to wear on our sleeves for others to see at all times. Having a conversation, getting to know a person or seeing someone in action can begin to erase some of those boundary lines. We are also more than what we're doing in any particular moment. Confining someone to be a parent only, an employee only, or a spouse only is limiting and short-sighted. Sometimes we get caught up in the routine of daily activities that even our view of ourselves can get skewed.
